Olumide Akinlabi

Attorney at Law

From a young age, I dreamed of becoming a lawyer, and fortunately, that dream came true. I graduated from law school, secured great jobs as a corporate attorney, and enjoyed great flexibility and work-life balance. You might think I had achieved everything I ever wanted. However, something was missing. I felt a significant void in my heart. I had always envisioned using my law degree to make a real difference in people’s lives. I frequently told myself, “Olu, there must be more you can do with your law degree.

As I advanced in my career and and businesses (my husband and I operate a a retail business, which includes two retail stores and an online store), I embarked on a journey to organize my my financial affairs with three goals in mind:

1) Be a good steward of money;
2) Plan for my life and retirement years;
3) Leave a legacy for my children and future generations (hence the name Life and Beyond).

I knew from my law school’s wills and trusts class the many benefits of having an estate plan in place. I also remembered a friend’s experience in college, where she had to drop out due to family conflicts and losing her primary residence after her father’s passing. These issues could have been avoided with a comprehensive estate plan. Additionally, a law school peer benefited from his grandmother’s trust fund, which paid for his tuition.

With these experiences in mind, I explored online estate planning document providers and traditional estate planning law firms to create a plan for my family. Through my research, I discovered a pattern that didn’t sit well with me—typical estate planning was often impersonal and ineffective. Many firms used a “one size fits all” approach, providing form documents without follow-up processes to ensure they accommodated future life events, changes in estate and tax laws, or shifts in client goals.

Determined to make a difference, Akinlabi Law PLLC, Life and Beyond Estate Planning was founded. I can finally use my law degree to provide estate planning in a relational manner, rather than a one-time transactional approach. My true calling resonates in the field of estate planning.

At Akinlabi Law, initial planning is just the beginning of the relationship. We focus on creating a plan that works for you and your loved ones. See below for some of the things we do differently based on my experience with the traditional model of estate planning. I am the best fit for those who want to use the estate planning process to pass on a legacy of love, care, and ease, rather than just leaving behind a set of documents. My goal is to ensure your family stays out of court and conflict, preserving harmony and peace.

On a personal note, as a mother, I deeply understand that planning is an act of love for the people who mean the most to you. The plan we design together will not only benefit you but also the cherished ones who will navigate life after you’re gone. It’s about creating a lasting legacy that reflects your love and care, providing comfort and guidance to your loved ones in their time of need.
